Analyse Information
Much of the information collected by Border Protection Command about vessels within Australia's area of interest is raw and on many occasions it may be duplicated across two or more collection agencies.
Before the information is analysed it is validated, its reliability assessed and it is then fused to remove any duplication.
Once properly validated and fused, the information will consist of:
- The vessel's location
- data concerning the vessel itself and
- data concerning the voyaging intentions of the vessel.
One tool for undertaking this information analysis is the Australian Maritime Identification System (AMIS) situated within the Australian Maritime Information Fusion Centre in Border Protection Command. AMIS will aim to create an integrated picture of the maritime domain.
Using AMIS, Border Protection Command intends to:
- Develop and maintain a comprehensive picture of vessels operating within 1000nms of the Australian Coast, in accordance with International Maritime Organisation Maritime Security (IMO MARSEC) initiatives;Track and assess vessels as they near the coast;
- Maintain an ongoing overall and specific assessment to ensure that any threats posed by suspect vessels are met and contained; and
- If necessary organise a response before any threat reaches our shores.
