Australian Maritime Information Fusion Centre
When fully established the Australian Maritime Information Fusion Centre (AMIFC) will be responsible for the production of operational and tactical intelligence information on all vessels approaching or operating within Australia's maritime environment.
The core business tool of the centre will be the Australian Maritime Identification System (AMIS). This system is designed to collect, collate, store, analyse and re-distribute information relevant to the detection, tracking and threat assessment of vessels operating in or approaching Australia's maritime zones.
AMIS will include such information as ship identity, crew, cargo, location, course, speed and intended port of call. From this information analysts across a number of agencies will be able to develop a total integrated security picture over Australia's maritime domain.
This integrated security picture will enhance the Australian Government's ability to respond to threats as far from Australia's coast as possible.
For information see the maritime zones fact sheet.
